Updated Retroactive Requirement:
Unintended Car Movement Protection
In 2023, the State of Florida adopted a new elevator safety code (Chapter 61C-5 of the Florida Administrative Code). As part of the new code, there was a requirement that all existing traction elevators must have means to prevent unintended car movement and ascending car overspeed protection by August 1, 2028.
As of May 25, 2026, Chapter 61C-5 has been amended to remove this retroactive requirement. These safety features are still required on new and altered elevators, but are no longer retroactively required. However, BOCA Group still recommends that you consider installing these devices on your existing elevators if they are not currently present.
