2028 Florida Requirement:
Unintended Car Movement Protection
Due August 1, 2028
Florida Retroactive Requirement
Unintended Car Movement Protection
Building owners and managers must ensure their elevators comply with the following retroactive requirement by the specified deadline:
An emergency brake shall be required on all traction elevators to protect against unintended car movement and ascending car overspeed.
Compliance can typically be achieved by installing a rope-brake device (such as a Rope Gripper). If installing such a device isn’t feasible, it may be necessary to install a new machine with dual independent brakes instead.
Compliance with this requirement must be achieved by August 1, 2028.
This requirement should be investigated as soon as possible to determine whether your existing equipment is compliant. Early assessment is critical to:
Identify the scope of the required upgrade
Estimate associated costs
Plan and budget effectively
Ensure all work is completed before the deadline
